Hexafluo’s C4F7N Contributes to the Successful Operation of the World’s First 550 KV SF₆-Free GIS

On May 29, 2026, the world’s first 550 KV SF₆-Free Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) was energized and put into operation at Yuxian 500 kV Substation of State Grid in Wuhan. This project sets a new global record for the application of this eco-friendly technology at ultra-high voltage levels and delivers valuable practical experience for power grids to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality targets.

The newly-developed 550 KV SF₆-Free GIS is a core eco-friendly unit of Hitachi Energy’s EconiQ® product portfolio. It stands as a landmark application of the brand in the ultra-high voltage power grid sector and marks a major breakthrough in the green transformation of ultra-high voltage power equipment worldwide.

This project adopts Hexafluo’s C4F7N (C4 gas) as the insulating and arc-extinguishing medium. All indicators of Hexafluo’s C4F7N gas including purity, moisture, etc. fully meet global and domestic technical standards and gain full recognition from the on-site engineering team. C4F7N gas can not only deliver outstanding performance making sure the stable operation of high-voltage equipment, but also drastically reduce the greenhouse effect of insulating medium and the carbon emissions in power industry. It delivers an innovative premium solution for the sustainable development of ultra-high voltage power grids.

In November 2024, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China officially approved the 11th batch of regular registrations for non-existing chemicals, and Hexafluo obtained the official registration certificate for the manufacturing of C4F7N.

In 2025, the China Electrotechnical Society completed the scientific and technological achievement appraisal of Hexafluo’s project titled "Independent R&D and Application of Eco-Friendly Power Insulating Gas and Power Transmission & Distribution Equipment", confirming that the overall technology of this project reaches an internationally advanced level. At present, Hexafluo’s C4F7N gas are already supplied to the leading power equipment manufacturers worldwide on large basis and are highly recognized by global customers.
